Job Summary

The ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice are exemplified within this Job Description. The Nurse is responsible for utilizing the Nursing Process to provide nursing care for the patient throughout their life span. Assumes responsibility for the outcome of nursing care delivered on their shift.

The Charge RN acts as a front line supervisor and clinical resource for the department. Demonstrates clinical expertise and assists and mentors nursing personnel on the unit, in patient planning and overall patient care management on a shift by shift basis. Provides direction to staff to facilitate meeting patient outcomes and coordinates staff assignments and duties, assists with completing the monthly staffing schedule for the unit.

The Registered Nurse demonstrates effective leadership skills and supports the nursing department's philosophy, objectives, and vision for empowered nursing practice and assists in short and long range planning for the nursing unit and department.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient/customer's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the population served in the department.

Graduation from an approved/accredited school of nursing.

Current license to practice in the state of South Dakota.

Certification Requirements for Position:

• BLS (Basic Life Support) ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Course)
• Minimum one year nursing experience required prior to charge nurse role.
• Assumes responsibility and accountability for safety, service, and delivery of nursing care provided on the unit.
• Responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide nursing care for a specific group of patients.
• Individually responsible for maintaining and updating professional practice.
• Accountable to seek professional opportunities to develop leadership skills.
• Individually responsible for maintaining and updating professional practice.
• Generally works, 12 hrs., day/night and weekend rotation.
