Under the direction of the Medical Director and/or Center Licensed Physician(s), the Physician Substitute determines the acceptability of all first-time donors and return applicant donors. The Physician Substitute evaluates the suitability of donors by following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to ensure the donor meets suitability criteria in accordance with FDA guidance and regulations. Additionally, the Physician Substitute reviews normal donor laboratory tests and refers abnormal tests to the Physician for further review. This role involves close collaboration with the Medical Director or Licensed Center Physician(s) while making decisions that directly impact donor suitability. The Physician Substitute also provides medical oversight in screening, phlebotomy, and the plasma processing areas.

Responsibilities

• Perform physical exams for new donors, return applicant donors, and annual donor physicals, excluding those receiving red blood cell immunizations.
• Administer and address donor questions regarding Plasmapheresis Informed Consent, RSV Plasmapheresis Informed Consent, and other applicable donation programs.
• Administer the AIDS Bulletin and assess donors' understanding of high-risk activities.
• Maintain accurate, legible, and complete donor records in accordance with cGMP.
• Review normal donor laboratory work within specified timeframes as outlined in SOPs and refer abnormal lab work to Licensed Center Physician(s).
• Observe and approve staff training in medically related areas.
• Ensure donor reviews are executed in accordance with SOPs.
• Provide immediate care and assessment of all donor reactions.
• Review all medical incidents and record appropriate DAE in the applicable donor center system, managing incidents when necessary.
• Complete and manage all Medical Incident Reports and conduct follow-up with donors in accordance with SOPs.
• Administer employee Hepatitis B immunizations following protocol.
• Administer donor immunizations as applicable.
• Communicate compliance or risk areas to the Center Director and Quality Manager.
• Provide confidential counseling to donors who are ineligible for donation.
• Maintain knowledge of all donation programs.
• Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
• Seek assistance from the center physician for matters outside defined areas of responsibility and authority.
• Maintain competence in all position-required tasks.
• Travel as needed.
• Perform additional duties as related to/supporting the needs of the business as assigned by Medical Director or Center Management.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and RN License or similar
• Experience in Medical Triage, Case Management, Phlebotomy, Managed Care, Clinical Care
• Current RN or LPN License in the state of MD
• Strong organizational skills
• Strict adherence to current good manufacturing procedures
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to interpret medical information to formulate appropriate actions
• Availability to work extended shifts and weekends
• Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
• Ability to lift, pull, or tug up to 40lbs
• Ability to work in a cold environment, -30C, for short periods
• Work involves extended periods of standing and bending
• Ability to train others
• CPR certified or ability to obtain certification

Work Environment

Work will take place at a Donor Center, on-site, with operating hours from Monday to Friday, 7am - 7pm. There are no weekend shifts. The environment may involve occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and working in cold conditions (-30C) for short durations.

Pay and Benefits

• The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
